Our season began in triumph at Oxted, thanks to a superb all-round team performance. A strong batting effort - undergirded by fifties from skipper and Shomit and glamourised by debut knocks from Benny Clinch and Dom Beardmore, topping and tailing an innings that yielded 255 runs from 45 overs - gave our bowlers lots to work with. They did not disappoint.
Tom Whyte, settling into a masterful spell (12-3-22-1), and Robbie prized out the openers before Matthew - in a mesmeric burst of Burton brilliance - ripped through their order, taking five quick wickets to all but finish the match (7-0-20-5). Some late-order resistance was winkled out by Dom, claiming a first Gaiety wicket, and a returning Robbie. They were impressively assisted by Sasha Dutta, 13, who showed in a two-over spell why she is already a county pro.
